Can virtual reality be the future of work? NBC News/Peacock tries to answer that question in episode 5 of their series, “What Does the Nature of Work Look Like?”
In this episode Alex Sigaras, Director of the AI-XR Lab at the Englander Institute for Precision Medicine, explains how he and his colleagues were using mixed reality before the pandemic to unravel the secrets behind a patients’ genetic makeup.
“We analyze big, complex information as a means to inform the Weill Cornell Medicine clinicians’ on how they can provide tailored treatment for a myriad of diseases, spanning cancer to Alzheimer’s to Parkinson’s disease and beyond,” said Mr. Sigaras (left).
Once the pandemic hit, researchers living around the world started meeting virtually. “Virtual reality and augmented reality have enabled us to carry out important pilots during the pandemic. And has allowed us to increase our productivity. The technology from the gaming industry is becoming more relevant in medicine and other fields to have to potential to save people’s lives,” explained Mr. Sigaras.
The potential of technology to improve patient outcomes still relies on the medical experts. “It’s not the headset or technology that saves people’s lives, it’s the clinicians,” added Mr. Sigaras.
